Do you find that your computer exhibits one or more of the following behaviors?
- Inexplicable message or warning pop-ups
- Frequent unsolicited reboots
- Your favorite application often crashes
- Applications now start up sluggishly
- Your computer seems to take forever to boot up
- You find new software running which you did not expressly install, and you cannot explain it's existance
Your computer may simply have become cluttered with software to such a degree that all those programs now fight with each other for resources, or a particular type of software installed (with malicious intent or otherwise) could produce adverse side effects and may even compromise your system's health and security. Even if your PC does not appear to suffer from any of the symptoms above, chances are over time one or more of these issues will surface.
So where should we look to find the root cause of such problems? In short, we can attribute this abnormal behavior to:
1) Our not being vigilant in monitoring the list of software running (or not running) on our system
2) Not being sufficiently mindful of how the installed software got there and why
Let me explain further. When one purchases a computer (or you inherit that “hand-me-down” from your relative) you will typically find a potpourri of software already installed. Furthermore, you will probably never use 80% of it. In addition, you may find yourself unable to resist the temptation to download and install freeware/shareware from the internet.
All too often we really do not need the programs we download, but refraining from doing so can be difficult due to the software's enticing promo. And regardless of the utility of these programs, many times we don't bother to uninstall them, thinking we may find a use for them in the future.
Just recently while browsing through a forum, I saw a post with the following opening line: I just had to reformat the family computer for the second time in three months because of my brother's blatant ignorance of general computer hygiene. I can assure you that such behavior is commonplace. The various computers in my own home are a prime example. On numerous occasions my two children, who by the way, are old enough to know better, downloaded and installed software which essentially rendered their PCs unusable, thus costing me hours of work to get them back into working condition.
If you take nothing else away from this article, try to embrace the following two thoughts:
- Not being aware of every program installed, and particularly which ones get invoked by default at startup time, could cause your system to become highly unstable, resulting in frequent crashes, loss of data, or possibly even irreparable hardware damage.
- Try at all costs to refrain from installing non-essential software.
While you may very well find an overabundance of non-essential software installed, even more important is the fact that there may NOT be antivirus, firewall, or other security/protection software running. Consider this point CRITICAL. The absence of such software or it being improperly configured can set you up for disaster! In an upcoming article we'll discuss the various “sleuthing” techniques for determining just what software resides on your computer.
The object of the second point above is to simply use good judgment in deciding which software goes and what stays on your computer. Sure, there's no harm in keeping reputable software around such as that favorite game or multimedia player, given that you know where it came from and you do at least use it occasionally.
OK, let's summarize our discussion. Start thinking now about your current software and which programs you consider as really important to you or your family. Remove everything else you can bear to part with. Furthermore, of the types of software you feel you must keep, evaluate it's “utility”. Some programs you may have obtained and installed, and others were probably just pre-installed on your PC. You may want to consider upgrading existing packages, or particularly in the latter case, other similar software may exist which has a better feature set that can serve you better.
Now go ahead. Take out the trash!
Stay tuned for the next installment coming shortly.

Spyware The Enemy To You And Your Computer
There is a good chance that if you are actively online with your computer system that in some way spyware will get installed. All it takes is just clicking on the wrong site or by signing up for some web programs. Pretty much everyday there is a new form of spyware that has been created by someone or some company that is seeking information. Also with the easy availability of high speed internet services it has made the spread of spyware even faster and easier.
Spyware was originally designed to monitor and transmit back information to its “home” or creator without the user’s knowledge sometimes. This data would used to send back advertising ads usually popup to your computer. Over time spyware has changed and grown and now it has four biggest types of “malicious software” and threat to computers worldwide along with viruses, Trojans and worms.
So what are the major dangers with spyware running in the back ground on your computer system?
To start spyware can cripple your computer and slow your computer to a crawl this is due to the way installs itself and configured to start whenever you boot up your computer system and runs all the time. The spyware steals both your computer resources and also your computer internet bandwidth. If network with multiple computers like a small business or home based business then the infected system with spyware can cause the over all network to slow down.
Another issue with spyware is the danger of invasion of privacy. Remember that these programs can collect all types of data from you computer system and then send back to its creator. Spyware usually collects information that can be used for advertising, marketing to see what websites you visit on a frequent bases. However there is a always that potential to user spyware to collect personal information such as financial, credit card and personal ID the purpose of identity thief or to gain access to those accounts along with email accounts and address books for spam purposes.
The latest way to infest you computer system have gotten even worse by using a bot net. This is where a computer or group of computers with a bot or “robot” software that works together to launch attacks on other computers to infect them with spyware. These bot nets currently focus more installing spyware programs on targeted victim computers.
Some of the most common forms of spyware are Bargain Buddy, Gain, b3b projector, Gator, n-Case, SaveNow, Search Toolbar, Webhancer and Search Assistant. These are just some the current spyware out today which can be difficult to uninstall toolbars to hijackers that take over you home page and pop-up windows generators.
Promoters of spyware or Adware say that they are doing nothing wrong because in some cases you agree to the terms of the service or EULA which states that you will provide this information to these companies.
Usually spyware will store files on your computer from a few cookies to .dll files and registry entries installed on your computer. Spyware is like another type of programs on your computer and when they run it used your computers systems memory and processor to keep it running which ties up valuable system resources on your computer.
Although some people may not mind generating data for these companies but even if it is the friendliest type of spyware these types of programs can lead to issue and can even compromise the computer security.
In my experience as an IT professional that on some systems that are so infected with spyware the only way to get the computer running normally was to completely reinstall the operating system because if a system is that impacted it takes hours and hours to remove the spyware and even then some of the worse types might still be on the computer.
Spyware along with other malicious software can cause serious issues and problems with how your computer operates and although there are some spyware removal program that you can run that will help protect and remove these types of programs. A couple of programs that I recommend are Ad-Aware from Lava Soft and Spyware Doctor 3.2 from PC tools. But even with these programs I always recommend the full backup of your computer system because there are still other malicious software program and hardware issue such as hard drive failures that can occur. By running regular backups on your computer system you ensure the protection of your data.
In conclusion spyware on your computer can be a lot of trouble for the person computer or if you operate a small business or home office. The best idea is to keep your computer system free of spyware and to run software protection just incase your computer is imfected.

Watching Satellite Tv Through Your Computer
If your home is equipped with a satellite dish for TV viewing, you know how enjoyable it can be. An abundance of nationwide and international programming options, sporting events that aren’t broadcasted on the cable networks, numerous satellite radio stations and more all add up to endless opportunities for your family’s viewing and listening pleasure.
But what about the expense of having multiple digital receivers in your home, especially when everyone usually gathers in one common area to watch TV instead of utilizing the additional units? Then you may not only be wasting money because the other receivers aren’t being put to use, but there’s also the long-standing issue of fighting over the remote as well.
One way to avoid the extra cost of multiple receivers is to install satellite TV on your personal PC or laptop. The reception is just as clear as viewing through the television (depending on your monitor), but the bonus is that you only pay a one-time fee for the instant download and once you’ve completed the installation, you get unlimited viewing and usage from it.
There’s quite a few online companies offering this type of software/service, so you’ll have to do a little research and pick the one that you feel is best suited to your needs in terms of price and provisions, but once you do, you can have instant viewing access to satellite TV, right on your computer screen. Your PC is actually transformed into an additional television set and digital satellite receiver so that you can watch TV from whatever room in the house you like. And with the satellite signal that comes through the internet, there’s even more channels available than with your regular TV’s dish receiver!
It’s incredibly simple and 100% legal to boot. There’s no need to buy extra hardware either – no special TV card, cable, USB port, etc. is needed –all you need is internet access. That means no fumbling with the dish on the side of your house to get the right angle or strongest signal for the best reception! And you don’t even need a ‘super fast’ internet connection – a 56K modem will do the trick quite nicely. Having little or no computer experience is not an obstacle either because all you do is pay for the software online, receive and access the instant download, then install it according to the prompts.
There are no restrictions on geographical locations, or where the computer is located in your home. You actually move anywhere in the world and still receive the same quality reception and access to the satellite signal. And the really great part is that you only pay a one-time fee for the software – there are no monthly service charges – and the prices are very reasonable. Even though the cost does vary, on average it’s only about $50 for a lifetime of usage!
So if you want to save money, gain access to even more broadcasting options and keep everyone happy watching their favorite programs instead fighting over the remote, satellite TV on your PC is definitely something you should consider.

The Weather Forecast On Your Computer
I use the Internet to find just about every type of information. Even the weather.
Sure, I could just stick my head out the window and call out, "Hello. What's the weather forecast today?" But if the response is "hurricanes, hail and meteor storms", I don't want my head to be on the wrong side of the window when the answer comes down.
Plus, that won't help me fine-tune my last minute travel plans.
So I turn to the Internet. There are three really easy ways to get a good weather forecast over the Internet:
Weather forecast websites:
There are some good weather forecast websites. The one I use most often, because I am in Canada, is The Weather Network http://www.theweathernetwork.com ), and I also like CNN ( http://www.cnn.com/WEATHER/ ).
CNN gives current conditions and a five day forecast. The Weather Network provides more detail, with a short term forecast ( this evening, tonight, tomorrow morning, etc.) and a longer term forecast over the next six days. The Weather Network provides the most detail of all the options, but it takes longer to download than the progress of climate change (so don't do it on a 26K modem!) Both offer forecasts for cities worldwide.
Weather forecast software:
A second way, which does not even require going to a website, is to get current conditions right on your desktop. There are free weather forecast software downloads, such as http://www.weather4you.info that display key data right on your desktop, and even provide a text summary one click away.
Weather forecasts on the desktop are probably the fastest way to get local weather information, and the data is updated every five minutes. The display can be set up for local weather, but a couple clicks allows for a quick check of conditions form almost every weather monitoring station in the world – ideal for making last minute travel plans
Weather forecasts by Google:
A third way to access the weather forecast is through Google. Yes, the find-everything search engine has added weather to its repertoire. For instance, search Google for "weather Orlando", without the quotation marks, and see what you get.
At the time of writing, this service is available only to cities in the USA (I presume Americans get more weather than other people.). However, it will hopefully be available everywhere by the time you read this article.
Google's is the least precise weather forecast of the options, but fairly quick and simple to reach if you are looking for information on a city in the USA.
All three options are worthwhile, whether preparing for the daily commute or making travel and vacation plans. So pull in your head, close that window and log on. Why stick your neck out when there is weather on your computer.

The Day My Computer Died
I’ve always been a skeptic when it comes to technology, especially computers and the Information Age. I used to think it was crazy how people would put their total faith into a machine, some even more so than in their faith in humanity. Human beings are flawed, imperfect creatures. I say this in a positive way because if humanity were completely positive and perfect we would have nothing to learn, and life would lose its vitality and mystery. Computers come from the same universal reality as humanity, so I believe that we should look at technology in a similar context. Computers are not infallible pieces of nature’s perfection.
I’ve come to learn that computers are great tools for human society. They can be functional in innumerable areas of everyday existence, helping to simplify many aspects of our lives. However, as today I discovered my computer had ‘died’ after a lightning strike had hit my house and subsequent power surge, the realization came that a complete faith in our progressive technology is simply not practical. I’m not saying that like the Luddites of the early era of industrialization we need to destroy this stuff, I’m just saying that we must realize that like all things in life, technology can and will become sick and die on occasion. Working at an Internet Web Hosting company I have been witness to many of these illnesses, and it has been very fortunate that human ‘doctors’ have been present to undertake surgery.
It’s a real bummer when something goes wrong, but these occurrences are necessary in a space-time continuum that is in constant flux. If you are a spiritual person, you might say that there’s only one thing in life to have unwavering faith in: Magical existence itself. You might be asking yourself by now, ‘What is this guy talking about?’ I think I’m just rationalizing the death of my newfound ‘friend’. I’m coming to the point where I understand my old fears were irrational and unfounded, as most fears generally are. However, I’m also wondering about these people out there who have more faith in computers than human beings. For instance, I know of a man who says that he would rather fly in an airplane under automatic pilot instead of the real thing. Human pilots can get drunk the night before and be depressed and hung over right? Whereas computers are completely rational, unemotional and unable to partake in activities deemed by most as unsavory.
The sad fact is computers can break and die. Maybe we need to find a happy medium where inorganic and organic intelligence work in tandem, so that if one half of the partnership fails, the other half can always compensate. Let me tell you I’m quite sad right now, but hey ‘shit happens’. I just hope that the ‘shit’ isn’t your plane landing in the ocean because of a computer that’s had too much vodka the night before.

Best Computer Speakers
Computer speakers nowadays are becoming more sophisticated in achieving the best sound quality for the fast growing market. Speaker systems come in a variety of features with the latest audio technology.
With the popularity of digital music formats, movies, digital video editing and computer games, manufacturers have rapidly developed and produced more and more computer speakers for their consumers. Speakers come in different models and designs, from 5.1, 6.1, to the latest 7.1 speaker systems.
The 5.1 computer speaker system is capable of creating a wonderful listening experience. One of the top quality 5.1 computer speakers is the Logitech Z-5500, with a price of $220. This speaker system tops in almost all reviews. The Logitech Z-5500 can produce heart-pounding bass, very natural mid tones, and crisp sound. It has superb power and accuracy when watching DVDs and when playing computer games.
Theoretically, the 7.1 speaker arrangement (satellite speakers plus a subwoofer) brings existing speaker systems to a higher level. Still, many experts question their value. According to Don Labriola of PC Magazine, "Depending on whom you talk to, 7.1-channel sound either is a legend of immersive audio or the reply to a query nobody asked."
With the introduction of the 7.1 speaker arrangement, another superior quality of multimedia sound is experienced. The 7.1 speaker arrangement is composed of 2 rear channel speakers. This is besides the 5.1 speaker system, with a set-up of 3 front speakers, 2 side surround speakers plus 1 subwoofer.
The gamers appreciate the 7.1 speaker arrangement more because it can be employed in computer games using Microsoft's DirectSound and Creative EAX sound processing. The 7.1 speaker arrangement does not have any difference with the 5.1 speaker system since audio CDs are recorded in stereo, only needing 2 channels. In terms of movies, the availability of the Dolby Digital audio is recommended for 5.1 computer speakers. It is best to use the 7.1 speaker arrangement with a high-end sound card to achieve its full features.
For the budget wise consumers who do not require the power of a surround audio quality, the 2.1 computer speaker is fine. You can still have the best listening experience with this speaker system. The Altec Lansing VS2421, with an estimated price of $40, is a good choice for a less expensive 2.1 channel computer speaker. The Altec Lansing VS2421 is rated as one of the best 2.1 computer speakers in the market. This 2.1 computer speaker can produce powerful bass. The Altec Lansing VS2421 includes a hardwired remote for controlling the volume and the treble. The remote in addition has a mute button, microphone, plus an auxiliary input for your mp3 player or CD player.
The Bose Companion 5 is an excellent choice for a computer speaker system. This computer speaker comes with a price of $400, a little bit expensive but the quality justifies the price. This computer speaker boasts its Bose's TruSpace surround processing technology. The speaker system comes with a separate volume control that also includes a headphone output and an input for MP3 players. Based on reviews, this speaker system produces great audio quality and has a solid state of a sound system.
Another 2.1 channel computer speaker with an affordable price compared to the Bose Companion 5 system is the Logitech Z-Cinema, with a fair price of $250. This computer speaker is ideal for a computer based home theatre. It also produces great sound quality.
For the mobile users or people who are always on the go they need a portable speaker for their notebooks and laptops. Several computer speaker systems mentioned above could be used with notebooks, but of course, they are not practical when it comes to portability.
The Logitech AudioHub is one of the recommended portable speakers. It only costs around $60. The Logitech AudioHub comes with a 15-watt speaker system, which includes three port USB hubs. The system consists of a 2-inch tweeters and 1 3-inch driver that acts as a woofer. It also comes with a web cam stand for adjusting the height while video chatting. A great companion for your notebook and at the same you can enjoy a good sound quality while on the go.

Computer Viruses - What Are They and What Do They Do?
A virus is known to many as an agent that causes different diseases. They have many modes of infecting all of the members of the animal kingdom. Although there are different types of viruses, they have one commonality; they are all harmful. Nowadays, the term virus has taken a different turn when it comes to the meaning. Now, it is more commonly associated with anything that brings a computer to its demise or to something close to that.
Computer virus has to be the most popular phrase when the thought of internet comes to the minds of most people. The reason is that they remember the destruction it brings. Computers have changed the way all people live. It has become important in all aspects of living may it be politics, religion or business. Just when we thought it could not get better, the Internet came along. Among all of the benefits of the internet, the one that people are most happy about is how it made communication much easier. In the old days, the only connection you have to your loved ones in other countries is through mail or telephone. Now, there are more efficient and faster ways of communicating. You can send an e-mail or a private message which will only take a few seconds and your message will be received immediately.
This advancement took a tragic turn when someone smart enough decided to make a computer virus. A computer virus, sticking to the true meaning of the word virus, is something that infects a computer, jams its programs and causes many problems to the user. It can bring any time of destruction from a small computer glitch to making your whole computer system crash.
Sadly, there are many ways that a virus is transferred from one computer to another. Storage devices such as USB can be a medium to transfer a virus. If two or more computers are connected via a network connection, a virus can be transferred. The most devastating news is that not only can it be transferred offline; it can be transferred online too. The internet became the most notorious aspect of the computer when it comes to getting it infected.
This is why the whole world, or the people who uses computers, rejoiced at the birth of antiviruses. These are the programs that are designed to track down and get rid of computer viruses from its system. Now, there are many ways on how to protect your computer using antiviruses. Although there are many antivirus programs out in the market today, they have one common factor: they prioritize prevention. They gave importance of detecting a virus that is threatening to invade a computer so that they can block it before it can cause any harm. Now, antiviruses are also wise enough to detect viruses that are already in the computer before they were installed and delete or clean it.
Aside from antiviruses, the users can also follow guidelines to prevent their computer from getting infected such as don’t access sites that are about pornography since most viruses are found here.

Why Does My Computer Freeze Up?
What Is PC Screen Freeze?
Anybody who has used a computer that runs on Windows would know and understand that there would be a point of time where your computer just freezes and everything stops moving. Basically, your computer just becomes immobile and there is nothing you can do but to stare back at the frozen screen. So what do you do now after you experience such a situation?
The only possible thing to do other than to switch off the power switch would be to be patient and wait to see if there is any change after a while. Sometimes, a freeze is just temporal and your computer will function normally after awhile. If not, there is not other choice but to execute plan B, which is to switch off the main power.
What Causes PC Screen Freeze?
One of the most well-known causes of a screen freeze is that your machine is using up every single bit of its RAM memory at that point of time. Thus without any free memory, your computer is practically running on nothing, thus it will be ‘immobilized’ some RAM has been freed up for your computer to function normally again. Just bear in mind that besides the programs you run, there are actually lots more behind the scenes that are working to ensure that whatever you are running can be run. Thus it may actually be running on its maximum amount RAM when it does not even look like it is.
Besides this, running multiple programs all at once can also be another cause for a screen freeze. Like what was mentioned previously, your RAM is used up but not by the programs that are working behind the scenes, this time round it is the programs you are running that cause the freeze. The sheer volume of programs run at the same timing can cause your computer to hit maximum RAM and without a doubt you will be seeing a frozen screen before long.
Other causes of a frozen screen might be because there is a fault in your Windows registry or maybe there is a system fault that is actually causing your screen to freeze. In most cases, if your computer is not functioning at maximum RAM, this is next most probable cause for a frozen screen.
Last but not least, the worst case which causes your computer to freeze up is because of a virus in its system. If the cause of your problem is really a virus that is in your computer system, there is little chance that you can actually view this article right now unless through another computer. In such scenarios, the problem is very likely to be terminal and there is not much chance for you to salvage it. Chances are that either you have to entirely reformat your computer or if you are willing to spend, you can always get a better computer, but remember to download some anti-virus programs this time round or else what you will see is déjà vu happening all over again.

Are You A Computer Addict?
What did people do before computers, anyway? I can’t imagine! But let’s be real. With the computer and internet so prevalent today, it’s no wonder that many people feel they couldn’t live without it.
Recently, my computer needed to be repaired. You would have thought I lost my right arm. I thought I was going to go insane! Fortunately, my best friend offered me the use of her computer so I could submit some articles that were due, as well as check my email so I didn’t have six hundred of them to sort through when I finally got my computer back. But this made me think: what would I do if my computer was taken away for good?
So how addicted are you? Granted, many of us use computers for our work. But I’m not talking about work. Let’s say you had a day off from work. Would you spend it online or playing computer games? And what if you had to be without a computer for a day? Would thoughts of checking your email or looking up a quick site consume you?
Look over the following statements and see if any sound familiar.
• The first thing I do in the morning is check my email.
• The last thing I do before going to bed is check my email.
• I bring my laptop into the living room while I watch television.
• If I want to check the weather or a movie show time, I don’t even think about looking in the newspaper, I check online.
• Our family argues over time on the computer.
• My kids have made comments that I’m always on the computer.
• I email more often than I pick up the phone.
• If the internet is down, I get frustrated.
• When out with friends, I think about checking my email at least twice.
• During devotions, the phrase, “you’ve got mail” interrupts your train of thought.
If you could identify with 5 or more of these statements, chances are, you’re a computer addict!
Of course, the Bible was written way before computers were even thought about. But The Word does say a thing or two about allowing something take a higher priority than spending time with God. And, I’ll admit, I’ve been guilty of doing just that.
Here are six ideas to begin to break the hold the computer has on you.
1. Set a timer for an hour or two. It’s easy to lose track of time while surfing the net or chatting with our friends on message boards or via Instant Messaging. Setting a timer is just an audible reminder that we’ve probably been on long enough.
2. The next time you think, “I’ll just send a quick email,” pick up the phone and call, instead.
3. Resist hitting that power button until you’ve opened up your Bible or at least said good morning to your Creator.
4. Turn off the computer after a certain time each evening. Maybe check email one more time after dinner and then shut it down for the night. Spend some quality time with your family. I guarantee they will be more fun than your Gateway.
5. Consider fasting for a day. Not from food, but the computer. Leave it off for just one day. It’s NOT going to kill you but it will make you stronger and more in control of your flesh.
6. PRAY! Ask God to decrease your need for more computer time and replace it with a desire for more God-time.
While it isn’t likely that computers are going anywhere, it is possible to diminish your dependency on them.
“Those who use the things of the world should not become attached to them. For this world as we know it will soon pass away.” I Corinthians 7:31 (NLT)

Can I Watch TV On The Computer? Why You Should Do It
The question on many laptop-toting individuals is “Can I watch TV on the computer?” Technology has taken great leaps and bounds, sometimes even more ahead than we have ever mentioned. Gone are the days that we thought television would be the final and only way to broadcast programs and news casts. These days, it’s all about satellite television that streams straight into laptops and computers.
How Is It Better Than TV?
You might be thinking that there is nothing quite like watching TV. Then again, there is nothing quite like surfing the Internet either. But imagine watching television and surfing on the Internet but doing it all on the same platform. Now that is a neat idea. Not only can you watch television on the PC but you can do it while working. This is actually very convenient for people who would like to keep up with the latest news from around the world while working. Satellite television straight to your laptop or your computer is also much better because you are no longer restricted to the limited number of channels that cable TV providers offer you. One can have access to 3000 channels from around the world.
The Price Is Right
Now, you may be enjoying all your television broadcasts on your cable service for a monthly fee. But if you switch to the satellite television on your PC as a solution, it is definitely going to save you more money than you ever dreamed of. Think about it. Sometimes it’s those monthly cable bills that eat up a little more money than you’d like to spend. Satellite TV on your PC solves this problem by offering you software that you can install onto your TV for a one-time, very low price. You can then start enjoying 3000 channels of programming from all around the world and you won’t have to pay a single cent ever. No more monthly bills to worry about, just pure access to all the news and entertainment you can handle. It’s better than free because it’s unlimited!
Can I Watch TV On The Computer Anywhere?
Remember that all you need to have in order for this to work is a computer, or a laptop and reasonable Internet access. Of course, having broadband will definitely make the experience much more enjoyable. The point is that is all you need aside from the software that you can buy at a very minimal price. You don’t need any satellite dishes or any special peripherals for your computer. What this means is if you install this into your laptop, you can enjoy television anywhere you can hook up to the Internet. Imagine watching television at all your favorite WIFI hotspots with friends or co-workers. There are even some parks that have free WIFI (depending on the city) so you can also sit in the park and still enjoy watching television.
It may seem that this is all too good to be true. But the truth is that this service does exist and it has been seven years in the making. Programming experts and technicians alike now have an easy-to-use solution for you to be able to enjoy television virtually for free. So if anybody ever asks you, “Can I watch TV on the computer?”, a simpler answer would be, “Why Not?”

When To Buy A New Computer And What To Do With The Old One
Computers are great. When you receive your first computer, you will be amazed and a little confused at what you need. The first time you surf the Internet, you will be hooked; there is no better feeling. As time goes on, you will find that the computer that you purchased does not suit you needs anymore. With all of the tools that are available such as downloads and online games, your computers memory will soon be insufficient. When this happens, it may be time to sell your old computer in order to purchase a bigger and better one.
You can find upgrades for your computer by doing a Google search, however, with the advances that are made in technology everyday, the upgrades may not be compatible with your computer. This is also true when you install a new operating system that may require new hardware. It is very easy to end up spending way more than the cost of a new computer. In some instances, you can save yourself a lot of time, money and headaches just by purchasing a new computer. This is not to say that upgrading your computer is a waste of time and money, only that there are times when it is unnecessary.
Once you have made the decision to purchase a new computer, you have to decide what to do with the old one. Even though it may not suit your needs, it is still a good computer that someone else may benefit from. There are several different things you can do with your old computer.
Kids – When you have school age children, giving them your computer can not only give them great joy, it can also assist them in their schoolwork. In today’s school system, many different subjects are taught and they are also required to do homework that requires a lot of research. Your old computer may be perfect for them because you can install educational materials such as encyclopedias and thesaurus’ can be installed to assist them with their schoolwork.
Often times, older people will shy away from purchasing a computer because they feel that they are too old to learn how to use one and that it is an expense that they can live without. However, if you give your old computer to them, they will often be more receptive to learning how to use it. Once they catch on, they will wonder how they got along without one. Another advantage of giving your computer to someone who has limited knowledge is that if he or she somehow causes a critical error, it is more easily fixable than with a new computer. This will give him an incentive to learn and later purchase one with more features and a larger memory.
Another thing that you can do with your old computer is to use it to store all of your records and important information such as bank statements as well as insurance and mortgage information. With this use it is recommended to disconnect it from the Internet to avoid anyone hacking into it, and also prevent any viruses from attacking it.
There are many different uses for your old computer. Even if your needs have outgrown the computers capabilities, it can still be a useful machine in your home

What Do You Mean I Need Permission? It's My Computer!
Picture this. You've spent all day working on organizing files and at the end of the day, you want to change the name of the folder to show the status of your work. Vista takes control and pop-ups start slapping you in the face.
"You need to confirm this operation." Ok, you click "continue"
Then another- "If you started this operation, click continue." Ok, you do.
Then another- "You need permission to perform this action" Good grief, I own this computer, I am the only one using it and I need permission? Who does Vista think it is?
You're given two choices- try again and cancel. Neither gives you the desired change of name.
What should have taken seconds is now minutes and you still haven't got it done.
Ok, so lets change permissions. Now where do you begin.
Right click on the folder and go to properties. Shared with everyone from there and tried it again. Same results.
Right click on the folder again and then chose "share". Another pop-up..."This may take a few minutes" The "few minutes" is now 5 minutes. Then finally, another popup- "your folder is now shared."
You try again. Same results.
You give up on that approach and make another folder naming it what you want. Then copy and paste from old folder to new. Now you wait while it is copying. Ok, three minutes later you have a new folder, named what you want and the old folder that you can now delete. Another pop-up, "Are you sure you want to move this item to the Recycle Bin?"
I wouldn't have had to, if you had just let me rename it!!
"yes" then wait another minute and finally you have accomplished your renaming of a folder Vista style.
What should have taken 5 seconds, took 20 minutes.
Thank you Vista for wasting my time, for thinking that I don't know what I'm doing, for your "I know best attitude."
I've had it. Ubuntu here I come!

Satellite TV On Your Computer?
Now that the web has evolved why should we pay monthly for a couple of hundred channels when we are now able to get 3000 + channels streamed live to your pc?
So how good is internet TV? The smile answer to this question is - very good. I personally only found out about how much internet TV had to offer when I was recently looking for a John Candy movie. I only pay for basic subscription from my cable service and feel they charge far too much to get all their movie channels, most of the same content can be found via internet TV channels.
As channels come from all over the world and more and more people migrating to the US from Mexico, to the UK from Poland etc.,TV on your PC enables you to watch TV in your own language anywhere. Sports channels from all over the globe are also shown.
So, does this mark the end of Sky and cable? Not likely. Maybe in another 20 years there may be a decline as the technology becomes more widespread. The bottom line is that TV of your PC has so much more to offer, TV, music, MP3 downloads and more, all from over 77 countries!
Rupert Murdoch may have his work cut out to stay ahead because in may option the internet is taking over world wide media.
For example yesterday I was able to watch Aljazeera TV from Iran which shows the Iraq war live. I've recently been learning my children Spanish so now I let them watch children's TV in Spanish! - a great learning tool.
The software I downloaded only cost me a one time fee, I've even put it on my partners laptop, as you can probably guess we are both very impressed.

The History Of Computer
Uninformed researchers of computer (computador) history would probably note the first computer in the mid 1930`s. In reality, this history dates nearly 2000 years ago with the invention of the abacus where the user programmed beads using formulated constructs.
Although many historians caution against the use of the word computer (computador) except to define 20th century computers, a broader understanding illuminates an instrument designed by a Frenchman and which functioned as a calculator and was designed for a tax collector in the 1600`s. Improvements to this calculator continued through the 19th century.
Similar work was underway in England and with the support of the government a `mechanical` calculator was invented. It was powered by steam and supported a fixed program for its use. This calculator went through many changes until an automatic calculator was invented. Following this flurry of discovery and invention, little changed until the early 1900`s when detailed mechanical and transportation work required complex mathematical calculations (especially calculus).
Two Census Bureau workers began to look for a means of accurately calculating information. They conceived the idea of a punch card which would be inserted into the computer (computador), read, and stored. The greatest advantage of these still slow moving machines was the ability to store large amounts of information with ease and accuracy.
The early 1940`s and the imminent World War, brought the military into the computer era (computador). New weapons requiring computer technology for effectiveness, were needed, designed and produced. These were large floor model machines and utilized the floor space of an average one family home (about 2,000 square feet). One independent computer (computador) was not adequate and a means was found to link computers which produced a more accurate and clear channel of information. These devices were not only cumbersome but they required rewiring and rechanneling for each program. Greater inventions were in progress. These new computers (computador) would be equipped with memory capacity and worker faster than any in existence at the time.
In 1947, the first modern programmable computers (computador) were designed. They contained RAM (Random Access Memory) and made it possible to access information in seconds. This technology continued to be tested and improved into the 1950`s when magnetic core memory and a transistor circuit element were discovered. These increased the memory capacity and functionality of the computers (computador). On the down side the cost to operate these machines was astronomical. By nearly sheer determination alone, these devices evolved into amazing machines able to work with a number of programs simultaneously while giving the impression that only one program was in use.
As recently as the 1960`s computers (computador) were more available and the price had become nearly reasonable for businesses. Their use however, was confined mostly to mathematically based operations such as billing, accounting, and payroll. One of the major purchasers of these devices was hospitals which stored date from patients, inventory, billing, treatments, and the like.
By the 1980`s smaller individual computers (computador) were being produced. Technology continued to astound the general public as the microchip came into existence permitting personal computers to be sold with accompanying program disks for downloading. A glance around most medium to large companies would reveal many desk top computers in use.
It would be impossible to track the history of computers (computador) without acknowledging Apple Computer and IBM for their leading edge and evolving technology. Radio Shack coupled with Apple Computer (computador) produced video games for the computer (a move from the arcade).
The ability for businesses and individuals to access the worldwide web gave birth to new and innovative marketing and communication with inquirers and/or clients. Today it is inconceivable that one attempt to research something on line and not find multiple references there. The momentum has only continued to mount and new upgrades are available nearly by the day.

What You Should Know Before Buying A Computer
Anyone who already owns a computer has a good idea of what his or her computer needs are. However, people new to the world of computers can get lost in the multitude of choices. Here you will find some tips to what a newcomer to computers should do and why.
1. Purchase Basic Peripherals
First your computer must include all the basic peripherals. There are four major components to most computers, these are the; mouse, keyboard, monitor and the CPU unit. You will have to purchase a computer that includes all of these components, and then at home all you have to do is to plug the components into their designated sockets. Many computers also come with color-coding, so that each component is easily identified and assembled into one computer.
2. Determine What The Computer Will Be Used For
Basic components as described above will be adequate for a computer intended for performing simple word-processing and spreadsheet tasks, sending email or surfing the internet. If on the other hand the computer is used in your multimedia career, you will require the use of a digital camera, printer, tablet, digicam and a scanner. If again your career is in music, you will require a set of quality speakers and microphones.
3. Create A Budget And Stick To It
Decide how much you can afford to spend on a new computer. Remember to purchase a computer where all the basic peripherals can be included in your budget when you first start out.
4. Shop By Comparing The Various Models With Each Other
Comparison-shopping is useful when choosing a computer, e.g. you may want to go with the fastest modem and processor as well as the largest hard drive and dynamic memory that fit into your budget. Having a computer with large spare reserves will cut the price to upgrade the computer system at a later stage.
5. Buy Brand Name Items
When purchasing a computer you want a model from a computer manufacturer with a good and long market presence and with a reputation of quality service and products. The manufacturer must also be financially viable since computer manufacturers tend to have a very high turnover. Only the best manufacturers make it over the long run. You want your manufacturer to be able to fulfill its servicing, warranties, trades and returns. Brand name computers are a bit more expensive, but it is in your best interest to buy well known brands.
6. Where to Buy a Computer
Once you have determined what you require in a computer as well as what kind you want, all that is left is to decide where to buy the computer. Computers are available from several sources such as, online stores, computer store outlets, used computer stores, auction sites and your local yard sales. It is highly recommended to buy your computer from a physical store, where you can see the computer and ask questions before purchasing. Buying a new computer from a physical store offers the benefits of store warranties and services as well as trades and returns.
Follow these suggestions and you will find the best computer hardware for your needs. All that remains now is to move on to the software you require for your computer.

Computer Basics
What is a computer?
Computer is an electronic device with a ability to: -
1. Accept data 2. Input, Store and execute instruction. 3. Perform mathematical and logical operation 4. Output results according to users requirement
Computer has certain Limitation:-
1. Cannot think on their own 2. Task has to be described in detail. 3. Do not learn from experience. 4. Cannot detect or correct errors in logic or data.
HISTORY OF THE COMPUTER : People have always needed to count. Earlier they counted with their fingers and probably through scratch making on trees or bones or on the walls of their caves. Over the centuries the science of numbers and computing has changed dramatically. People are now able to solve very sophisticated problems, and increasingly so with the aid of computers. Today we use computers in virtually every environment. From the executive in an office to the housewife and her washing machine to the teenager recording his/her favorite television programme, computers have entered into practically every sphere of human activity. The history of computing can be traced back to Abacus (2000 BC). Used primarily by merchants, the Abacus was a mechanical device used to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers. Centuries later, mechanically operated devices were developed. These machines could add and subtract numbers (in 1642 Blaise Pascal's Calculating Machine), as well as multiply divide numbers (in 1671 Leibniz's Calculator) A few years later Charles Babbage, referred to as the "father of computers" devised a machine (Analytical Engine) which could be "programmed" by instructions coded initially on punched cards and then stored internally.
GENERATION OF COMPUTERS :
First Generation Computers - 1951-59 : They used vacuum Tubes as their principal component. They could store 10,000 to 20,000 characters. Magnetic Core Memory was used.
Second Generation Computers - 1959-64 : The Second Generation Computers replaced the Vacuum Tubes with Transistors. This led to the miniaturization of Computers. The concept of Multi Programming was introduced with Second Generation Computers. The most popular Second Generation Computer was the IBM 1401.
Third Generation Computers - 1964-70 : The Third Computers introduced integrated circuits, the equivalent of hundred and thousands of transistors on a small silicon chip. This drastically reduced the cost, size and power requirements. This technology produces powerful Mini Computers.
Fourth Generation Computers - 1970 till now The LSI (Large Size Integrated) Technology with many thousand of Electronic Devices on a small silicon chip signaled the Fourth Large Number of Character could be stored and also these Computers were much faster. IBM 370 was most popular machine.
A computer system can be viewed as a system of three Major Components:-
Hardware : It deals with a computer equipment that is mechanical, electrical, and electronic parts of the computer.
Software: It contains programs that instruct a computer how to process data and generate required information.
Human-ware : Person who operate the computer and also those who write the program i.e. - operator, programmers etc
CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT :-
The heart of the computer is CPU It performs the various function with help of following components :-
1. RITHMETIC LOGICAL UNIT (ALU) :- Performs the actual calculations such as addition, multiplication, subtraction, and comparison like greater than lesser than, equal to, positive, negative or zero
2. MEMORY UNIT (MU) :- Memory unit or main storage unit holds data, instruction (that are being interpreted and executed, the results are ready for the output)
3. CONTROL UNIT (CU) :- The control unit co-ordinates the operation ofthe hardware. It also co-ordinate the flow and execution of data and instruction that are feed into the memory or main storage of CPU.
PERIPHERAL DEVICES
Peripheral devices can be classified as
1) INPUT DEVICES: - It allows feed the data into C.PU. (Computer) Examples of output devices are explained below: -
1) KEYBOARD - It is a important input device which is use every where. The keys are same as typewriter. They are classified as follows: -A) Alphabet Keys (A to Z). B) Numeric Key (0 to 9) C) Alphanumeric keys (!@#$% ~ &*) D) Function keys (Fl, F2, F3,..... F12) E) Arrow keys (Up arrow, Down arrow, Right arrow, Left arrow) F) Special keys (ENTER, TAB, CAPS LOCK, SHIFT, CTRL, ESC, ALT) 2) MOUSE - It is a device, which can easy to operate by one hand only.
It looks like a rat or mouse. It includes a three buttons & we can operate mouse through that buttons
2) OUTPUT DEVICES - The data, which we feed in computer through input device that data are displayed through, output device whenever called. Examples of output device as follows: -
1) Monitor (Screen of the computer)
2) Printer (DOT Matrix, Laser, etc.)
3) Backing Storage Devices :- Are those devices which can store data feed in by the use of input device. Some examples of backing storage devices are as below:-1) Hard Disk 2) Floppy Disk 3) Compact Disk (CD)
CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTER
Computers can be classified on purpose, components and size
1.ANALOG COMPUTERS 2.DIGITAL COMPUTERS 3.HYBRID COMPUTERS
Analog Computers : Analog computers are computer that measures physical quantities (eg. Temperature, length, pressure, Whether reports etc...) and convert them to numeric values. It is used mainly for scientific & engineering purpose.
Digital Computers : Digital computers are used for mathematical operations such as (eg . addition ,subtraction, letters, symbols)
Hybrid Computers: The features of analog and digital computer are combined to create a hybrid computing system. The doctors to measure hearts beats SIZE mostly use hybrid computers –
All digital computer store numbers, letters and other characters in coded form. The code used to represent characters is the binary code - i.e. a code made up of binary digits or bits. Every character is represent by a string of "Os" and ""Is" - the only digits found in the binary numbering system. When data is types into a computer the keyboard convert each keystroke into a binary character code. This code is then transmitted to the computer, when the computer transmits the data to the - printer or the screen, or to the disk, each individual character is communicated in binary code. It is then converted back to the specific character while displaying or printing the data.
One 'Bit1 is a short of Binary Digit. A collection of 8 bits is known as a BYTE and half of byte i.e. a collection of 4 bits is known as a NIBBLE; 1 Byte= 8 Bits; 1 Kilobyte (KB)= 1024 Bytes; 1 Megabyte (MB)= 1024 KB; 1 Gigabyte (GB)= 1024 MB.
Note :- Every character you type occupies 1 byte, Every Space occupies 2 bytes and every Enter you hit occupies 2 bytes.
TYPES OF STORAGE SYSTEM
1. INTERNAL STORAGE :-
RAM :- (Random Access Memory ).Where programs arid data are held during processing temporarily. Data stored in the RAM is lost when either the machine is switched off. ROM :- (Read Only Memory). Where permanent instructions or data are held. The ROM does not require a continuous supply of power to retain it contents.
2. EXTERNAL STORAGE:-
(A) HARD DISK : Hard disks are a collection of/ pack of diskettes, known as platters, made of aluminum, with their surface being coated with iron oxide joined together to form a cylinder. They have more storage capacity and speed than floppy disks.
(B) Floppies are made of Mylar plastic coated with magnetic oxide. The flexible material is cut into circular pieces.5 1/4" or 3 1/2" in diameter. They are called Floppy disk"

Desktop Computer - Know It Better
Desktop computers, a type of micro computer, fit on a desktop and are used widely in offices and home. Personal computers or home computers, workstations, internet servers and special communications computers are four types of desktop computers used. Desktop computers are widely used in household, schools, business as these computers are very cheap.
The desktop computers are normally modular and its components can be easily upgraded or replaced. These are available in elegant case styles. They are used for carrying various tasks like organizing digital photos, office tasks, editing of video and accessing Internet.
Micro Instrumentation Telemetry System (MITS) 8800 offered the first desktop type system in 1975. The launch of this variety of computer encouraged scores of other companies to produce personal computers. In 1977, Tandy Corporation (Radio Shack) launched its model of personal computers having a keyboard and CRT. In the same year the Commodore PET and Apple II were also released market and these are forerunners of today`s Desktop computers.
Introduction of IBM PC, in 1981 by IBM, was a milestone in the field of Personal Computer. Based on Intel`s 8088 microprocessor, it became a success overnight. The introduction of a 16 bit microprocessor paved way for more powerful and faster micros. Also standardization in computer industry could be made as IBM PC used an operating system which was available to all the computer manufacturers. Apple Mac PC using Motorola 68000 is another series of 32 bit popular personal computers launched by Apple in 1984.
A modern desktop computer consists of Display Motherboard, CPU, Primary storage (RAM), Expansion cards, Power supply, Optical disc drive, Secondary Storage(HDD), Keyboard, Mouse.
All the desktop computers come with ports which allow plugging different external devices into the computer viz, keyboards, monitors, scanners, printers. The different type of ports are Universal serial bus, Ethernet, Modem, Headphone, Serial, Parallel, PS/2, VGA, Power connection, Fire wire, and Card reader.
You should surf the internet to check for detail guides available before purchasing a desktop computer. A few important points are listed here which may help you to have an informed purchasing decision:
Processors (CPUs): It is a very difficult choice to make between an Intel processor and an AMD. The main difference comes in the relative speed and number of cores in the processor. You should refer for the detail information on this in the internet sites.
Memory (RAM): It is best to have at least 1 GB memory system and older DDR memory standard should be avoided. For better performance, faster memories are must and ensure that future upgrades of memory are possible.
Hard Drives: 250 GB or more storage space is best to have in present days. Serial ATA interface is used in most drives now for ease of installation.
Optical Drives (CD/DVD): Multiformat DVD burner which can support both +R/RW and -R/RW with a 16x recordable speed are best to have in desktop computers.
Video Cards: Integrated graphics is sufficient if you are not doing 3D graphics. The important things which you should consider are the memory capacity of the card, version of Direct X supported, output connectors and the performance. For the purpose of games a Direct x 10 card with 256 MB memory should be considered.
External Connectors: Instead of internal cards, external interfaces are preferred now for various upgrades and peripherals to computers. IEEE 1394 or FireWire points and USB 2.0, both should be present in a desktop computer.
Monitors: These days LCDs are more popular than CRTs. This is because they have less power consumption and have reduced size. Also traditional aspect ratio of 4:3 is being replaced by wider display screen and prices of 20-22 inch models are decreasing.

Computer Software
Computer software is the combination of programmes and applications which interface with the physical components of the computer, the hardware, to enable the user to perform specific functions and tasks. There are two basic types of software, known as system software, which is responsible for the basic functions of the computer, and application software, such as Word Processing programmes, which enable the user to perform actual specific tasks, e.g. typing.
An operating system is the software behind all of the system and application management; it is responsible for organising and controlling how each of the systems interface with each other (basically the smooth running of every programme), for example, allocating the appropriate amount of memory in accordance with which programmes are running and require more power and input. Examples of operating systems are Linux, and of course Microsoft Windows, which holds a monopoly on the computer market for such systems. Without an Operating system, computers are merely empty shells with little or no use. They will typically run their won application software, for example Microsoft Windows has packages such as Microsoft Office, which deals with word processing, publishing, presentation slides, databases, etc. Modern computers can run several applications simultaneously without crashing and becoming slow, depending on the power and capabilities of the operating system.
Software is constantly being up dated and new versions being released, so much so that current systems can become out of date within months – it is a very fast moving and fast evolving area of industry. Microsoft have just released their latest operating system to follow on from the roaring success of Windows XP; Vista. Packages available include Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate and Business. The main improvements and selling points of this service package include state of the art user interfaces (Aero – Authentic, Energetic, Reflective and Open), easier transfer of media between devices and computers, better security (virus protection, etc) and new multimedia programmes. For example, Windows Media Player 11 is included in the package and has undergone a major revamp; including user interfacing, new search capabilities, and the facility too hook up with external devices such as the Xbox 360.
However, many consumers are fully aware of Microsoft’s dominance in the computer industry and in particular the software market, and are reluctant to shell out for the new programme where many of the new features are seen as luxuries rather than necessities, and on top of that Vista cannot be installed on any machine – brand new machines must be purchased with the system already built in. So potential customers will have to buy a whole new PC setup just to be able to use Microsoft Vista – not a popular choice amongst consumers in an industry where there will doubtless be further improvements and new, better software waiting just around the corner. An advantage gained then, for rival Linux, whose majority of software CD’s and packages can be accessed for free, so whilst it is a lot more complex and less user friendly than the likes of Microsoft and their Windows packages, yet it remains one of the most reliable and up to date operating systems out there.
